How to reprogram the espresso shot volume on your Sage or Breville Barista Express

Get the right amount of espresso every time

When using the default/preset espresso shot volume or the Auto espresso mode, depending on the grind size you’re on, the Sage or Breville Barista Express will extract anywhere between 40 to 60 grams for a double espresso. I usually find that to be watered down and flat in aftertaste. The longer the extraction, the more diluted your espresso shot will turn out.

There are 2 ways to adjust and get a tastier espresso, with more texture and rich in flavor too, which will also help when used in combination with steamed milk.

Go with the Manual mode

The Manual mode helps keep my favorite brew ratio in check (dose of ground coffee relative to the amount of espresso extracted). With the help of a scale, I can easily track and stop the extraction as soon as the ideal amount of espresso has been achieved.

Reprogram the espresso shot volume

Alternatively, when you want to be more time effective, here’s a quick and useful hack to get the right amount of espresso every time. This also applies to other models, such as the Barista Express Impress and Barista Pro.

My hack is to reprogram the espresso shot volume, the 1-cup button, 2-cup button or both. It’s very easy to implement and I recommend using a coffee scale in order to be precise.

  1. Press the PROGRAMME button

  2. Press the 2-CUP button to start the extraction

  3. Press the 2-CUP button again once the ideal amount of espresso has been extracted. The machine will beep twice to indicate the new 2-CUP volume has been set.
